Tarzana's three biggest October dates come from two places. Both are mission-driven venues. Neither is a business that opened this year. The Tarzana Community & Cultural Center has a 1960s-themed gala on Saturday, Oct. 17, and an outdoor Music Night on Friday, Oct. 30. On Vanalden Avenue, Tarzana Recreation Center hosts a free Pumpkin & Scarecrow Fest on Halloween, which falls on a Saturday this year. Meanwhile, most of the new businesses on Ventura Boulevard this fall have been coffee and casual counters, built for a morning order or a quick lunch rather than an event.
That split shapes how the rest of the month plays out, starting this week.
Six Days Out: Carnaby Street on Ventura Boulevard
The Tarzana Community & Cultural Center calls its annual gala its biggest fundraiser of the year. This year it is themed "Welcome to Carnaby Street," a nod to the swinging '60s. According to the event listing, the party starts at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 17, at the center, 19130 Ventura Blvd. The listing promises music, dinner, an open bar and a silent auction.
Two details matter for anyone still deciding. On the center's own site, tickets are listed at $200, and the early-bird deadline has passed. The auction is also in person only this year. In the center's words, "The auction will not be online this year; it will be at the event only." If you plan to bid, you have to be in the room on the 17th.
A gala that funds a community center is a different kind of night from a restaurant opening. The money stays with the building that hosts the neighborhood's meetings, classes, art and music all year. Any donated item that sells at the auction pays for the next round of programming at 19130 Ventura.
Two Weeks Later, the Same Building Does the Opposite
The center's next event costs one-twentieth as much. Tarzana Music Night returns on Friday, Oct. 30, at 7 p.m. Tickets are $10, paid in advance online or in cash at the door.
The center's announcement includes three plain sentences that cover the logistics:
"These shows are outdoors and they will not sell out. Chairs will be provided."
The bill is a long one, with a rotating group of local musicians before the headliner. The center lists Suze Lanier Bramlett, Mike Baber, Abby Posner, Joseph Eid, Dina Silver, Curt Allen, John Zipperer, Natalie Brice, Marty Axelrod, Lisa Martin, JaKL, Brent Hahn and Sal Guitarez. Tushie goes on at 8 p.m. as the special guest. Will's Bountiful Catering will be selling pizza, and snacks and drinks are also for sale, so dinner can happen on site.
One venue ends up holding both ends of the month. The same address that asks $200 for an open-bar gala asks $10 for a folding chair and a pizza slice two Fridays later. Few addresses on the boulevard cover that range, and none of the new arrivals is set up to try.
Halloween Weekend, Back to Back
Music Night lands the evening before Halloween. Because Oct. 31 falls on a Saturday this year, the weekend runs as one sequence. Friday night is at the cultural center. Saturday is at the park.
Tarzana Recreation Center, 5655 Vanalden Ave., is putting on its Pumpkin & Scarecrow Fest from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Oct. 31. The Department of Recreation and Parks flyer calls it free family fun. It lists carnival games, prizes, candy, a jumper, music, arts and crafts, and the park's first-ever pumpkin-carving contest.
The costume contests are the part that needs planning. They run on a fixed schedule by age group:
| Contest group | Start time |
|---|---|
| Ages 0–2 | 11:30 a.m. |
| Ages 3–5 | 12:00 p.m. |
| Ages 6–8 | 12:45 p.m. |
| Ages 9–12 | 1:30 p.m. |
| Family / Group | 2:00 p.m. |
According to the flyer, each contest has three categories, and there are no makeups for missed times. A family with a toddler and a third grader has two arrival windows, an hour and fifteen minutes apart. Families who want to enter the group costume should plan to stay until 2 p.m. The rec center's number on the flyer is (818) 343-5946.
The rec center is busy beyond the one Saturday. Its Fall '26 co-rec flag-football league starts in October. Games are on Wednesdays and some Fridays, and the season runs eight games. According to the flyer, practice days and times vary, and some games may require travel to other sites.
The weekend, in order
- Friday, Oct. 30, 7 p.m.: Tarzana Music Night at the cultural center, 19130 Ventura Blvd. Tushie plays at 8.
- Saturday, Oct. 31, 11 a.m.: The Pumpkin & Scarecrow Fest opens at 5655 Vanalden Ave.
- Saturday, 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.: Costume contests by age group, family and group contest last.
- Saturday, 3 p.m.: The fest wraps, leaving the evening open for trick-or-treating.
What Ventura Boulevard Added Instead
The commercial side of Tarzana did change this fall. The changes mostly happen before noon.
The biggest name is Philz Coffee at 18640 Ventura Blvd. What Now Los Angeles reported the Tarzana plans in June, when the opening timeline was still being finalized. The Philz Tarzana location page now reads "Now Open!!" and lists Sunday hours of 6 a.m. to 4 p.m.
One digit up the street number, at 18641 Ventura Blvd., Tillie's Coffee labels its Tarzana location "NOW OPEN." That puts two new coffee counters at nearly the same address on the boulevard.
Farther west, at 19540 Ventura Blvd., Wakey-Wakey is the café inside Yummies + Play, a play venue that posts daily hours and takes bookings online. The coffee comes with an indoor play space for families with small children.
On Reseda Boulevard, Flavez Burger at 6120 Reseda Blvd. posts daily hours and online ordering. It is a counter-service burger spot, not a reservation room.
Taken together, this fall's additions are places for a morning order, a weekday lunch or a play date. None of them is set up to host a 14-performer outdoor bill or a costume contest with five age brackets. Those still come from 19130 Ventura and 5655 Vanalden. For a Halloween weekend in Tarzana, the new coffee counters fit between the two community venues.
A Weekday Evening Worth Adding
One more date belongs on a resident's calendar this week. The Tarzana Neighborhood Council has posted a Sepulveda Basin Vision Plan update for Wednesday, Oct. 14, at 6 p.m.
That puts Tarzana's late-October public calendar in this order. A planning update on Wednesday the 14th. The gala on Saturday the 17th. Music Night on Friday the 30th. Pumpkins on Saturday the 31st. A neighborhood council, a community center and a city rec center organize all four.
For Jonathan Ruiz, knowing a neighborhood means knowing which addresses hold its calendar, from the Carnaby Street gala to the costume contests on Vanalden. If you own in Tarzana and want to understand how that local fabric shapes what your home is worth, request a private market consultation.
